Long Island is the largest (214 acres) and longest (1.75 miles) island of the Boston Harbor Islands.  Long Island is connected to
Moon Island by a steel bridge and Moon Island is connected to Quincy.

In the Civil War, this fort was located on the island.  In 1882, the City of Boston purchased a large hotel on the island and converted
it into a homeless shelter.  In 1921 it was turned into a hospital and home for unwed mothers.  In 1941 the facility was again enlarged
to provide treatment for alcoholics.

In World War I, 1,500 soldiers were stationed here.  By WWII, its guns were obsolete, and the fort was abandoned.  In the 1950s, a
Nike missile base was established on the island; after its abandonment, the base was used to store hundreds of thousands of books for
the Boston Public Library.  Though the hospital closed in 1991, the alcohol treatment program and homeless shelter still exist on Long
Island
.  The island also includes a cemetery of 2,000 unmarked graves for many of the patients who died there.

You can not visit Long Island unless you are on a business trip or bringing donations to the shelter.
